Week 11
Before class today I thought asexuality meant absolutely no sexual interest towards anyone. I thought that a total lack of sexual intrest was the only defining quality of this sexual orientation. I found it very interesting to learn that I was wrong about this and that a person who is asexual can kind of exist on this scale of no sexual attraction, to infrequent attraction or only in specific situations. Additionally, I was also misinformed and didn’t know asexuals could experience romantic attraction.
I think this really goes to show how limited research on this sexual orientation impacts peoples education on it. I incorrectly interpreted it from its most basic definition- not sexual and would have likely never known any better without this class. For some reason I almost did expect that asexual people masturbated though. I think that’s because I knew asexual people weren’t sexually attracted to other people, but didn’t think that meant they had no sexual drive at all.

I feel like an idiot I completely thought that asexuality meant no sex drive and no sexual attraction towards anyone as well! I’m very glad that we’re learning about these things, because I’m pretty certain that I would have just carried on in ignorance if this class didn’t address topics like asexuality. It’s really interesting that those who identify as asexual can be romantically attracted to others as well, if only in specific circumstances. Also, I love your Freud memes.

I honestly felt the same way! It didn’t come as a surprise that asexual folks do masturbate. I am mostly perplexed on why or how people are asexual. It was nice to be educated on the topic though!
